The goal of this class is to introduce a series of yoga poses chosen to build bone, strengthen muscle, increase flexibility, improve balance and posture.
In 2005, Loren Fishman, M.D., a physiatrist at Columbia University specializing in rehabilitative medicine, began a small pilot study to determine if yoga had an effect on bone mass in patients with either osteoporosis or osteopenia. His findings over a number of years concluded that participants who practiced yoga regularly had improved bone density in the spine and femur.
Fishman found that 12 particular yoga poses held for several seconds with attention to alignment was the key to reaping maximum benefits for bone health.
You don’t have to be suffering from bone loss to reap yoga’s benefits of better bone health. In fact, you may be able to help prevent the onset of osteoporosis or osteopenia with regular practice.
Jann Boyer, certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher, will use Dr. Loren Fishman’s method to guide participants through poses selected to build healthy bones.
